Many houses have motion sensors connected to the floodlights in their driveway or at the door. The reason is obvious... home security. When the light flashes on, you may see someone trying to intrude on your property, or better yet the light may scare them off.

Motion sensors can also be used inside the house. Connected to an alarm, they'll signal if a burglar is in the house. There are several motion sensors on the market, and it's your decision how sophisticated they need to be. For example, there are some motion sensors that are hooked up to a computer capable of learning your routines. This way if your husband or wife comes home late each night, the sensor will recognize the pattern and not signal an alarm. Other sensors are hooked to monitoring companies with specialists who check up on you when an alert is sent.

1. Motion sensors use infrared light or lasers to detect a change in the light reflected back at the sensor. Any change in reflection will set it off.
2. The most common motion sensors are used outside of homes to set off floodlights that light entryways to the house.
3. Motion sensors can also connect to an alarm in case of a possible burglar lurking in the area.
