Mention steel doors and the image that comes to mind for many is the fire-resistant steel entry door to the furnace room at work or school. But exterior steel doors have changed dramatically and are now much more than functional.

The steel doors manufactured today look great and can provide a sense of security that cannot be matched by wood doors. There are a number of options to consider when choosing an exterior steel door and hopefully the information provided here will help you make the best choice for your building project.

Benefits of an Exterior Steel Door

The benefits of a steel door over a wooden door can be both obvious and subtle. Security is often the biggest reason why you would choose a steel entry door. Many exterior steel doors also have a higher insulation value than any wooden door on the market. You may even be surprised to learn that steel entry doors can have decorative glass and panel designs which make them look like wood.

Options for your Steel Entry Door

To help you choose which options you want in your steel door, consider these questions:
  1. How often will this steel door be used?
  2. Will your exterior steel door be subject to impact from vehicles or other objects?
  3. Does it matter how heavy your steel entry door is?
  4. What design features do you want or need?

Options for You to Consider Include:
  1. Embossed doors and glass light kits for your steel door.
  2. Core material with higher fire resistance or insulation values.
  3. Pre-wired electrified steel entry doors ready for electronic signs, switches, locks and monitors.
  4. Exterior steel door strength and weight.
For security and energy efficiency at reasonable costs, a steel door is a much greater value than a wooden door.
